Commercial truckers carry roughly 70 percent of the nation's cargo. Considering the prevalence of this mode of freight transportation, it's important to ensure that truckers drive safely. Unfortunately, with the average trucker putting in as much as 70 hours across an eight-day workweek, driver fatigue remains a major safety issue. An estimated 100,000 truck crashes occur every year because of fatigue.
This is where a software startup called BlyncSync, which was founded just three years ago by a group of Oklahoma University graduates, comes in. This company is aiming to become the hub for wearable safety devices in the trucking industry. Its first initiative is to develop a pair of smart safety glasses that report trucker fatigue in real time by capturing blinks, all while being less intrusive than in-cab cameras. It's also developing devices like watches, bands and smart hard hats that capture biometric data.
The goal of BlyncSync, according to its CEO, is to provide tools and incentives for truckers to become better drivers. Its work could help toward reducing accidents, insurance rates and even trucker turnover rates, which are known to exceed 90 percent in some regions.
BlyncSync is building a scalable business plan with the assistance of i2E, an Oklahoma-based nonprofit. Its first pilot program will begin with five trucking companies in Oklahoma and elsewhere.
If a motorist is hurt in a truck accident caused by negligence, a personal injury claim may be in order. A lawyer could have the case investigated by third-party experts. That way, it can be shown that the trucker, for example, violated the hours-of-service guidelines and was therefore driving in a fatigued state. Work logs, safety software and physical evidence at the crash site can all be used against the trucking company.
