Divorce mediation requires some planning on your part

On Behalf of | Jul 19, 2018 | Divorce

Divorce mediation is a process that enables you and your ex to work together to come up with the terms of the split. This is often a preferable alternative to having to go through a divorce trial. One of the draws of mediation is that you have a say in what you are going to get when you end your marriage.

Just because mediation seems like an easier option than a trial doesn’t mean that you can go into the sessions unprepared. Instead, you need to make sure that you are ready to handle the negotiations.

One thing that is critical in these cases is that you have an idea of what is going to happen. If you are going to be dividing property, you need to know what property is included in the process. If you are going to be discussing child custody, you need to have an idea of what is going to be decided.

During your preparation phase, you should gather any important documents that might come in handy for the meeting. This can be investment, bank and retirement account statements or copies of deeds and mortgages. It might help you to make a list of what properties and assets you would like to walk away with and which ones you don’t mind letting go of. This provides you with an idea of how to proceed.

When it comes to the child custody matters, you need to think about what is best for your children. A list of what you feel strongly about might help you stay focused on what is important as you negotiate the parenting plan with your ex.
