Attorney Matthew Shafner Files Lawsuit Against State Farm Insurance

3/26/2010

Recently, Attorney Matthew Shafner filed a most unusual lawsuit concerning a case involving State Farm Insurance. It involved a small child who was a passenger in a one-car accident. The child had fractured her skull, leg, and pelvis, and was left with a large disfiguring scar on her forehead. Although her medical bills exceeded $52,000, State Farm Insurance offered to settle the claim for only $22,000.

The child's parents thought this was generous of State Farm Insurance since it was their own insurance company. State Farm Insurance then hired its attorneys to go to Probate Court to obtain the Court's approval of the settlement. When the Probate Judge saw the scar on the child's forehead he rightly refused to approve the settlement as being inadequate. The lawsuit is now in the Superior Court in New London.
