What are some common factors in motorcycle accidents?

On Behalf of | May 31, 2018 | Car Accidents

The warmer Connecticut weather has bikers jumping onto their motorcycles and hitting the road. Unfortunately, this means more opportunities for motorcycle accidents as well.

Connecticut is above the national average when it comes to motorcycle fatalities. Nationwide, around 14 percent of all traffic fatalities involve a motorcycle death.

In Connecticut, it’s closer to 20 percent.

While there isn’t one cause, here are a few factors that can contribute to more motorcycle accidents:

No helmet

Riding without a helmet is one factor in motorcycle fatalities. Connecticut law only requires full-helmet use on riders 17 and younger. Helmets can prevent severe head injuries or death in the event of an accident.

When motorcyclists choose not to wear a helmet, the injuries suffered in an accident can be more serious.

Impaired biking

Over a quarter of all motorcycle accidents involve an impaired driver. Alcohol does not mix with motorcycle rides.

Motorcycles require a good sense of balance and strong reflexes to operate. Obviously, alcohol affects both of these.

When anyone drives impaired, the consequences can be severe.

Distracted drivers

Distracted driving is another problem that affects both motorcyclists and automobile drivers.

Drivers texting, checking their email or even eating their lunch are a common sight on the roads.

This has become a trend nationwide, and it’s no different in Connecticut. Distracted driving causes issues for everyone on the road.

Spring is when motorists and bikers become accustomed to sharing the highways again.

Cutting down on impaired and distracted driving, as well as wearing the right equipment can help lower the number of serious motorcycle accidents on Connecticut roads.

If you’ve been injured in a motorcycle accident, an experienced attorney can help you get the compensation you deserve.
