Divorcing with kids? Talk things through ahead of time

On Behalf of | Aug 5, 2019 | Divorce

When you’re divorcing with children, it’s a smart choice to start talking to your kids about what to expect early on. From toddlers to teens, every child deserves a chance to understand what’s happening in their lives.

Some parents believe that shielding their children from the divorce is the same as hiding the divorce from them, so they may hide what they and their spouse are going through until it’s time to move into a new home. That’s not usually the best method for kids.

There are a few tips that can help you approach the topic and assist your kids in understanding divorce and what it means for them. They include discussing divorce and what it is, setting up a routine and being ready for questions.

1. Discussing your divorce

To start with, it’s a good idea to discuss the idea of the divorce with your children. At any age, you can sit them down and explain that mom and dad won’t be living together anymore. From there, you can help them understand what will happen next.

2. Get a routine ready

Kids do well with routines, so remember to maintain your children’s routines as much as you can. A simple routine can reduce the stress of going from one home to another or living in separate homes since kids know what to expect.

3. Be ready to field questions

Finally, make sure you’re giving your kids the opportunity to ask questions. Reaffirm that they are not to blame and that you love them, so they feel comfortable coming to you to talk about what they’re going through.

These are three tips to help during your divorce with children. With planning and support, your children will adjust.
