Suisman Shapiro Sponsors Holiday Food Drive at Regional Health Expo

10/27/2009

Uncasville, CT. – Community stakeholders have come together again to forge an extensive grassroots campaign to collect donations of food and money to help the hungry in southeastern Connecticut. A Holiday Food Drive will be conducted on Sunday, November 1st in hopes of generating significant supplies of non perishable food items in time for the holiday season.

The Food Drive collection will take place at Healthy Habits Showcase, a free health expo in the Uncas Ballroom at Mohegan Sun. The public is invited to bring dry goods and canned food to the event which opens at 10 am and closes at 4 pm. Collection bins will be available at the door for all donations.

One hundred percent of the donations of the food and money directly benefit the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center which distributes food to needy families throughout New London County. The Center supports soup kitchens, pantries, community meal sites, shelters for the homeless, after school programs and programs for the elderly.

The Thanksgiving Food Drive is sponsored by Tri-Town Foods and Suisman Shapiro Attorneys at Law. Tri-Town Foods takes pride in being locally owned and has four stores in eastern Connecticut including its newest supermarket in Montville. The Suisman Shapiro law practice based in New London, has deep roots in the community and is sponsoring the food drive for the second consecutive year.

The idea to incorporate a major food drive into the Health Expo originated with the Tribal Health Department at Mohegan Sun. The sixth annual health showcase is a family oriented, interactive event on wellness, nutrition, safety and fitness. Tribal Health Director, Scott Sjoquist stated, “Our hope is that the hundreds of families that attend our free expo to learn about health, will also bring non-perishable food items to help their less fortunate neighbors. That alone is a great lesson for kids.”

Quinn & Gellar Marketing of New London is coordinating sponsor solicitation, media coverage and event management for the Holiday Food Drive. The Day and The Times newspapers have provided extensive promotional coverage. The Hall Radio Group has also promoted the event on all six of its stations in eastern Connecticut.
