Mesothelioma: Learn more about this rare disease

Of the personal injuries that you may suffer, one of the most surprising is mesothelioma. It's a rare disease and type of cancer that is normally only present when a person has been exposed to asbestos.

Mesothelioma occurs in the tissues covering the internal organs, called the mesothelium. This kind of cancer is aggressive and difficult to identify, which is why many patients don't find out that they have it until they are in the late stages of the disease or terminal.

What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?

Pleural mesothelioma, which occurs around the lungs, includes symptoms such as:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Painful coughing
  • Unusual lumps of tissue under your skin, particularly on the chest
  • Chest pain
  • Unexplained weight loss

There are also three other kinds of mesothelioma, peritoneal, tunica vaginalis and pericardia. Each of these are extremely rare, so the symptoms are not well understood.

What causes mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is caused by changes in a cell's DNA. Genetic mutations are not common. It is most likely that those who develop mesothelioma will have been exposed to something that increased their risk, like asbestos. It is also possible to have a risk of mesothelioma if you have had radiation therapy to the chest or have a family history of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is not able to be cured in most patients, and complications can cause death. If you have been affected by this serious disease, reach out to your attorney. You may be able to seek compensation for the asbestos exposure that has led to you developing this rare cancer.
